Carolyn Comeau -
DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

...Although labs are typically located at rental properties, there has been an increase in the numbers found in motels, state campgrounds and federal forests.  For the years of 1995-2000, Washington State Department of Health received notification of 16 labs in motels, whereas for the sole year of 2001 notification was received for 16 motel labs.  Illegal manufacturing of methamphetamine involves the improper use of hazardous chemicals, and can create substantial hazards to public health.  Chemical residues left behind can cause burns, upper respiratory distress, neurological damage and death.  Chemical contamination resulting from methamphetamine production has been found at lab sites up to two years after the sites were closed down.  Enactment of RCW 64.44 recognizes the need to protect future occupant of properties used for the manufacture of clandestine drug.
