"Nobody knows for
sure just how many youths are using the drug, but a statewide survey three
years ago found that roughly one in 10 high school seniors had tried meth at
least once."

The Washington State Adolescent Health
Survey in 1998 reported that 11% of high school seniors had tried meth at least one time.
Ecstasy
A popular drug at "raves"
(all-night teen parties) is Ecstasy (MDMA). This drug is similar to the stimulant
amphetamine and the hallucinogen mescaline. For $25 a pill, users claim the effects can
last from 4 to 8 hours. Users report being drawn to the abundance of energy and heightened
sensitivity to touch. The drug has, on some occasions, led to heart and kidney failure.
Teens are sometimes sold methamphetamine as Ecstasy.

"'I'm, going to sell,' she told the
dealer. Who would suspect a 16 year-old girl of dealing crank or carrying
$1,000 in her purse?" (Dying for a drug fix,

"National studies show that 22
percent of all meth users are 18 or younger. Another 35 percent are 18 to
23. Washington ranks as the third-highest meth-producing state."
