The events of the past quarter started with an auspicious beginning in the naming of Mr. Joseph Peters as the new HIDTA Program Director. Joe was the previous Philadelphia-Camden HIDTA Director and the former Executive Deputy Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Joe is also a former Police Officer. He replaces Rich Yamamoto who is now with the Federal Protective Service.

The Northwest HIDTA has been approved to receive an additional million dollars in funding for FY 99. These funds will enable the NW HIDTA to establish a central site integrated Federal/State/Local task force in the Seattle/King County metropolitan area. However it will have a regional responsibility to conduct investigations throughout the HIDTA area. Funds will also support the DEA\Pierce County\Tacoma task force, the Thurston County task force and the LEADS\CCNU\DEA task forces in the Yakima valley. The Washington State Patrol’s meth response lab team will also receive additional funding. These projects will round out the HIDTA law enforcement program that also includes the Snohomish Regional task force and the Northern Border task force in Blaine. They will be supported by and share information through the HIDTA Investigative Support Unit. Other supplemental funds will be allocated to the HIDTA Prevention program to enhance the Community Coalition initiative and the Management Information System/ Evaluation initiative.

General Barry McCaffrey also paid his first formal visit to Seattle. He spoke to the Seattle Chamber of Commerce and to the University of Washington’s Schools of Law and Medicine. He also had dinner with the Executive Committee and was briefed on the current NW HIDTA program. General McCaffrey also offered extensive comments on both National and International issues as well as his direction on the HIDTA program. The General also toured the Port of Seattle with key law enforcement officials as well as a visit to the Army Madigan Hospital at Fort Lewis.
