The drug threat in Eastern Washington counties was also examined in a separate threat assessment which was prepared at the request of Representative George Nethercutt, 5th Congressional District. Congressman Nethercutt requested that the NW HIDTA assess extending the HIDTA area into Eastern Washington. The findings concluded that drug- related crimes were increasing and the data was presented to law enforcement and prevention/treatment community members in Spokane and the Tri-Cities areas. The HIDTA report disclosed that drug treatment program admissions were escalating due to the increased abuse of heroin and methamphetamine. Serious drug-related crimes were also on an upward slope according to law enforcement agencies. The Northwest HIDTA Executive Committee approved inclusion of Tri-Cities and Spokane regions in the HIDTA program contingent on increased funding.

Copies of each report are available by calling the Northwest HIDTA, 205.394.3600.
