The leadership of the National HIDTA program has recently changed with the naming of Mr. Kurt Schmid, Chicago HIDTA Director as the Action National HIDTA Program Director. He replaces Mr. Joseph Peters who is now the Acting Assistant Director for the Bureau of State and Local Programs.

He will still be very involved with the HIDTA program. A change has also occurred in the number of HIDTA's with the inclusion of selected counties in Oregon, Hawaii, Central California, Ohio and New England being designated HIDTA areas. I look forward to having a very close relationship with our counterparts in Oregon and have met and talked to them on a number of occasions acting as their designated mentor at the request of ONDCP.

We have just finished the process of approving our Threat Assessment and Strategy for FY 2000. The committees that reviewed it felt it was the most comprehensive document to date on the status of the drug trafficking threat in our area. Many thanks to the agencies that participated in the drug survey as well as the agencies and sources of information that contributed to this document. If your department or agency would like a copy, please notify us and it will be mailed to you.

The NW HIDTA has also finished its assessment on expanding to other counties in Eastern Washington. Per the approval of the Executive Committee I have forwarded a request to ONDCP for inclusion of Spokane, Benton and Franklin counties into the NW HIDTA contingent on the availability of additional funding. Each county proposed for inclusion must meet statutory requirement and go through an extensive review process in Washington D.C. Again this would only happen if further funding is forthcoming. I wish to thank everyone that participated in this project.
