We were recently reminded of the need for drug investigators to plan for secure radio transmissions on non-encrypted systems. A law enforcement supporter, Gordon Mitchell of Future Focus, Inc. was recently testing electronics equipment in the Woodinville area prior to going out on a countermeasures project. His radio scanners readily picked up conversations between narcotics officers talking about a drug purchase. From the un-coded discussions, he quickly determined the surveillance locations and target site for a drug buy. Unless we are using encrypted radios, this situation is a good reminder that Radio Shack and other stores sell equipment which allows the interception of law enforcement radio systems.
